South Kazakhstan is the largest region by population in Kazakhstan, and is the most densely populated, with about 3 million inhabitants, and which is also the fastest growing.
This is due in large part to the milder climate, the proximity of water, and the access to large urban centres, such as Tashkent and Shymkent.
It is a region of mixed agriculture and industry, with existing industrial activities in metals mining and smelting, agriculture, oil refining, pharmaceutical industry, and cotton growing and production.
